Isn't this the same as the bank's mortgage insurance?
No. Bank coverage is a group policy the lender owns: it pays the bank, shrinks as you pay down, and is usually checked for health only after a claim. Your own policy is approved before you need it, stays level, and pays your family.
What does it cost?
Most people guess far higher than their real price. A healthy 35-year-old non-smoker often pays under $50 a month for $500,000 of 20-year term coverage. Your price depends on age, health and coverage, and is an estimate until the insurer reviews your application.
Do I have to do a medical?
It depends on the insurer, your age and the amount. Many policies need only a phone interview; some need a nurse visit. Our advisors will tell you before you apply.
What if I switch lenders or sell the house?
Your policy comes with you. Bank coverage usually ends when the mortgage does.
